Thoughts on New Years Eve

Tomorrow is New Years Eve. It used to be a day that I would dread when I was younger because I always felt under pressure to go out and pretend to have a good time. Even though I would rather be at home in the warm, tucked up in bed, ignoring the fake festivities. Of the few occasions when I did manage to drag myself out for a New Years do there’s only one that I can recall being half decent. And that was only because the landlord of the pub the party was held at had the good sense to limit the amount of people who could attend, which meant there was no half hour queues to get served.

These days I can see New Years Eve for what it really is. Another ‘event’ that’s been hijacked by the retailers and hyped up by the media in order to make us spend even more money that we haven’t got on a load of stuff that we don’t really need.

One tradition of New Years Eve that I do like to get involved with though is the making of resolutions, and this year is no exception. So, here’s 3 things that I would like to achieve in the months ahead:

  1. Learn to play at least one song on the guitar – I bought an electric guitar last year with a vision of actually being able to just pick up and play whenever I felt the urge. Since owning the guitar I’ve managed to tune it a couple of times using an app and.. well, that’s about it. So this coming year I’m going to make it my mission to teach myself how to play.
  2. Try to lose weight – I know this is the resolution that many people make and then abandon within the space of a few weeks but it’s something that I genuinely need to try and do for my own health and well-being. Since going back onto anti-depressants my weight has soared from around 12 stone to 18 stone, which in turn has led to me developing Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. So significant weight loss in 2019 is a must.
  3. Discover more – Whether it’s new authors, new bands or new shows. I want to expand my horizons in terms of the media that I consume. I want to read more books, discover new music and embrace new ideas and formats that might previously have passed me by.

What are your hopes for the year ahead?

  1. 1. To only buy online when there is absolutely no alternative – we need to stop taking shops for granted.

    2. Get more exercise, whether that’s going for a walk or getting the garden sorted.

    3. Spending less time on my phone and more time doing more interesting stuff.

    4. Discovering loads of new music – age doesn’t mean you should lose interest in new stuff.
